As part of the Ireland 2016 centenary celebrations we were delighted and honored to welcome Sergeant Derek Dinan and Private Liam Mulcahy of the Defence Forces to Scoil Mhuire on Wednesday 18th November. They came to present us with our National Flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation. Sergeant Dinan talked about the history of the flag, the protocol involved and explained why next year is such a special year of celebration for our country. The children were then given an opportunity to ask lots of questions about the 1916 Rising, the National Flag and what it was like to be in the army. Sergeant Dinan and Private Mulcahy gave very generously of their time and were very happy to stand for photographs with children, parents and staff. Míle buíochas to Anna Loftus who read paragraph 4 of the Proclamation, Nathan Hogan who accepted the Flag on behalf of the school, Erin Mc Carthy who accepted a copy of the Proclamation in English, Jude Cullen who accepted a copy of the Proclamation in Irish and Leah O' Connell who accepted a copy of Amhráin na bhFiann. We look forward to raising the Flag on Proclamation Day, March 15th 2016 and to celebrating this event with parents and the local community. Míle Buíochas to Councillor Emmett O' Brien, a past pupil of Scoil Mhuire, who came along to the ceremony to celebrate the occasion with us.
